Abstract: »This article analyzes the methodological and epistemological implications of developing and implementing a digital research environment for a historical project on sexual abuse in the context of the Catholic Church in Switzerland. Starting from the limitations of conventional spreadsheet-based data collection, the paper describes the transition to a specialized, semantic MediaWiki database hosted in a high-security environment. The authors argue that this technical infrastructure is not merely an auxiliary tool but a fundamental methodological investment that shapes the historical knowledge-building process. Using the example of negotiated data modeling – such as the operational shift from the field ›information stability‹ to the category ›source criticism‹ – the text demonstrates how hermeneutic inquiries and digital structures mutually influence one another. By facilitating a workflow that alternates between qualitative close reading and quantitative distant reading, the relational database enables the reconstruction of systemic patterns, such as the systematic practice of transferring accused clerics, which are difficult to grasp using traditional, analog methods.« (Source: Zeitschrift für digitale Geisteswissenschaften)
